As Kuraray approaches its Centennial in June 2026, our #RisingStars series recognizes the next generation of talent shaping Kuraray America, Inc.’s (KAI) future. Our latest feature is David Hagen, Technical Service & Development Engineer III in KAI’s EVAL business unit.

David attended Baylor University, where a professor introduced him to plastics research work involving coconut shell biomass in developing communities. That experience led him to Texas A&M University where his PhD focused on barrier coatings and “nano brick wall” structures designed to help block oxygen and other gases. Six months before graduation, David joined KAI as a TS&D Engineer I.

Growing into the Work
David’s early years at KAI gave him a strong foundation in customer-facing technical support, from helping customers select ‘fit for purpose’ EVAL™ EVOH resin grades to validating packaging designs and troubleshooting production-line challenges.

As a TS&D Engineer III, David supports advanced technical evaluation through KAI’s Production Disposition Management team. He leads knowledge-sharing sessions for cross-functional teams, covering topics such as polymer processing and EVAL™ EVOH resin applications for sustainable barrier packaging via the Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR) webinars and the annual Kuraray Barrier Solutions Seminar (KBSS).

Advancing Recyclability
David leads KAI’s work with the APR and worked closely with our Kuraray Research and Technology Center (KRTC) team to help earn the APR Design® Recognition for EVAL™ EVOH resin.

“The recognition opened a real door for our customers. They can design with EVAL™ EVOH resin and promote the recyclability of their packaging with confidence, which strengthens the recycling stream for everyone,” he says.

Beyond Work
For David, work-life balance means being present for his family. Beyond his role at KAI, David is a husband and a father of four children. At home, that presence shows up in everyday moments, from soccer and biking to kayaking, swimming and homeschool learning.

That perspective also shapes why safety matters to him. Working safely means he can be there for his team and return home to the people who depend on him.

Looking Ahead
David credits mentors Gene Medlock and Edgard Chow with teaching him how to deliver excellent technical service and their emphasis on gaining the deepest understanding and greatest value through face-to-face visits with our partners.

That commitment to hands-on technical service continues to shape his work today.

“Our work touches lives at every step of the value chain, from the converters we supply to the families who use the final products. It’s truly a joy to be part of that journey,” he says.
