Kuraray America Showcases Sustainable PVOH Innovations at TAPPICON 2026

Compared to conventional solutions, the technology demonstrated improved durability, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced recyclability for fiber-based packaging applications.
Rising Star Ryan Martins Kuraray

Kuraray America, Inc. presented and exhibited at TAPPICON 2026, held April 26–29 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio, engaging with industry professionals across the paper and packaging sector.

During the event, Kuraray delivered a technical presentation titled “Nano Clay-Modified PVOH: A Recyclable Barrier Solution for High-Humidity Packaging Applications.” Presented by Vitor Godoy, Technical Service and Development Engineer, and Hiroki Kinumura, Research & Development Engineer, Kuraray Kurashiki, the session explored advancements in hydrophobically modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and its role in improving barrier performance in high-humidity environments.

The presentation highlighted how nano clay-modified PVOH significantly enhances water vapor resistance while maintaining film integrity and recyclability. As an established oxygen barrier for paper-based packaging, PVOH offers strong compatibility with water-based heat-seal layers and retains its performance during sealing. By incorporating high-aspect-ratio inorganic materials, the modified solution addresses long-standing humidity limitations, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional urethane and starch-based coatings. Compared to conventional solutions, the technology demonstrated improved durability, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced recyclability for fiber-based packaging applications.

At Booth #513, Kuraray showcased its PVOH solutions portfolio for paper and packaging applications, including EXCEVAL™, ELVANOL™, and KURARAY POVAL™. These materials support a range of applications such as barrier coatings for packaging, tissue applications, optical brightening agent (OBA) carriers, co-binders for coated paper and board, and specialty PVA solutions for the paper industry.

Attendees had the opportunity to connect with Kuraray’s onsite team, including David Higginbottom, Vitor Godoy, and Silverio Giesteira, to discuss how these solutions can address evolving industry demands for performance and sustainability.

Kuraray’s participation at TAPPICON 2026 reflects its continued commitment to advancing innovative, sustainable materials that support the future of paper and packaging.
