Advancing Electronic Material Coatings: Shun Okura to Present at the 2026 Polyurethanes Technical Conference

The presentation will share findings from Kuraray’s research into how the molecular design of liquid polycarbonate diols influences the performance of urethane acrylates used in electronic material coatings.
Polyurethane Technical Conference Pre-Post LI Graphic (Presentation) - V2

Developing materials for electronic applications often requires balancing competing performance requirements. Coatings and encapsulants must be easy to process while delivering flexibility, strong adhesion, and reliable performance under heat and moisture.

Shun Okura, Sales Engineer at Kuraray America, Inc., will explore how molecular design can help achieve that balance during a technical presentation at the 2026 Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Okura will present “Development of Liquid Polycarbonate Diol (PCD) for Urethane Acrylate in Electronic Material Coatings” on October 6 at 2:30 p.m. EDT at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.

The presentation will share findings from Kuraray’s research into how the molecular design of liquid polycarbonate diols influences the performance of urethane acrylates used in electronic material coatings.

By introducing methyl-branched structures derived from 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol (MPD) and adjusting the ratio of MPD to 1,6-hexanediol (HD), the research evaluated the effects on viscosity, mechanical properties, adhesion, and reliability.

Three findings he'll be sharing:

→ Lower viscosity: MPD branching significantly reduced viscosity by suppressing intermolecular aggregation, with the effect reaching a plateau at approximately a 5/5 MPD/HD ratio.

→ Adhesion reliability: MPD-containing urethane acrylates demonstrated excellent adhesion retention after 1,000 hours of damp heat testing.

→ Application-specific performance: A 5/5 MPD/HD ratio is suitable when flexibility and elongation are priorities, while a 9/1 ratio offers advantages when adhesion to various substrates is required.

Okura will share the research with fellow researchers and industry professionals working to advance materials for electronic applications.
