Saponification

Saponification is a chemical reaction in which ester compounds, such as those found in polyvinyl acetate, are hydrolyzed in the presence of an alkali, resulting in the formation of a corresponding alcohol and a salt. In the case of PVA, saponification converts polyvinyl acetate into polyvinyl alcohol.
