The prices of Kuraray's polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin molding material, methylmethacrylate (MMA) monomer, and methyl acetoacetate (MAA) will increase by ¥25 per kilogram from October 1, 2004.
PMMA molding material is an optical material used to make light guides for LCDs and auto parts. Strong demand has resulted in a tight supply-and-demand balance in Japan and the rest of Asia.
Thriving demand continues for PMMA, MS resin, and transparent acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin, and an extreme supply-and-demand crunch persists in Japan and the rest of Asia.
As with PMMA and MMA monomers, in Japan and the rest of Asia the market is tight for MAA, which is used to make coatings and adhesives.
However, the prices of crude oil and naphtha have risen, and the prices of acetone, methanol, and other important materials continue to increase. This has caused a steep drop in both domestic and overseas operating revenues from PMMA molding material, MMA monomer, and MAA.
In view of these circumstances, to maintain the stability of supply and avoid financial losses, Kuraray is forced to adjust prices as outlined below.
